School Refusal Recovery

When your child can’t face school, knowing what to do next matters.

Parent course | 10 self-paced lessons | AUD $149

School refusal can turn mornings into a cycle of distress, conflict and uncertainty. This course gives parents and carers a calm, structured way to understand what may be driving the non-attendance and decide what to do next.

  • understand likely drivers, triggers and avoidance patterns
  • reduce escalation without simply giving in to avoidance
  • work with the school on realistic adjustments and re-engagement
  • build a gradual plan your child can manage

If every school morning feels like another crisis, you do not need more generic advice.

Parents are often told to just get them there, be firmer, reduce demands, reward attendance, or wait for anxiety to settle. The difficulty is knowing which response fits your child and which response may accidentally make the pattern harder to shift.

This course helps you slow the problem down, identify what is maintaining it, and choose a more deliberate response.

What you will leave with

  • A clearer explanation: identify likely drivers, triggers and patterns instead of responding only to the behaviour you can see.
  • A calmer response plan: use steadier language, reduce repeated arguments and make decisions before the next difficult morning.
  • A gradual re-engagement plan: break the return-to-school task into manageable steps rather than treating attendance as all or nothing.
  • Better school conversations: go into meetings with clearer questions, practical requests and a shared focus on reducing barriers to attendance.

Inside the 10 lessons

1. Understanding school refusal
Clarify likely drivers, triggers and the avoidance cycle so you can respond to what is underneath the behaviour.

2. Recognising signs and knowing when to seek extra support
Notice behavioural, emotional and physical cues, and distinguish when parent strategies are enough from when additional professional help is needed.

3. Building a gradual re-engagement plan
Create manageable steps back toward school or school-related routines, with pacing that can be adjusted as your child responds.

4. Rebalancing parental accommodations
Understand when understandable efforts to reduce distress may also be maintaining avoidance, and how to change support without withdrawing compassion.

5. Difficult conversations without escalation
Use clearer language, calmer timing and practical structures for recurring conversations about school.

6. Anxiety skills and thinking traps
Recognise common anxiety patterns and practise steadier responses when distress rises.

7. Bullying and social stress
Identify bullying and peer stressors, consider online factors, and prepare practical questions and requests for the school.

8. Gaming and avoidance loops
Understand when gaming becomes part of the avoidance cycle and create routines and boundaries that are realistic for your household.

9. Parenting strategies that reduce conflict and build resilience
Bring routines, boundaries, reinforcement and calm responses together into a more consistent home approach.

10. Setbacks and maintaining progress
Plan for difficult days, review what is working and keep the focus on steady movement rather than perfection.

Practical resources are built into the course

School Refusal Recovery is built around a simple principle: families need evidence-informed ideas translated into calm, structured actions they can actually use when things are difficult.

“Even after Lesson One, you will walk away confident of applying the new skills. A really comprehensive Course – very helpful”

Kyra, Social Worker

Is this the right course for your family?

A good fit if…

  • your child is distressed about attending or is increasingly avoiding school
  • mornings are becoming difficult, unpredictable or conflict-heavy
  • anxiety, overwhelm, learning needs, sensory stress, bullying or other barriers may be involved
  • you want a structured parent plan rather than another list of tips
  • you want clearer language for working with your child and the school

Not a replacement for…

  • urgent mental health or medical care
  • an individual diagnostic assessment
  • one-to-one therapy or clinical treatment
  • emergency support when a child is at immediate risk of harm

If safety is an immediate concern, seek appropriate urgent local support first.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can I start?

Once your payment is successful, your website account is linked to the course automatically. You can then access the course through My Account.

Do I need to complete one lesson every week?

No. The course is self-paced. Many families choose about one lesson per week so they have time to practise, but you can move more slowly or revisit earlier lessons.

Is this suitable if my child is neurodivergent?

The course includes factors such as sensory overwhelm, learning needs and neurodivergent stress. The strategies still need to be adapted to your individual child, and some families will also need clinical, allied health or school-based support.

Do I need the school to participate?

You can begin the course at home. Several lessons help you prepare clearer conversations, requests and re-engagement planning with the school when collaboration is available.

Will the course guarantee that my child returns to school?

No. School refusal is complex and progress is rarely linear. The course is designed to improve understanding, planning and parent responses, not to guarantee a particular attendance outcome.

Can I revisit the lessons?

Yes. You can return to your course through My Account whenever you need to review a lesson or resource while the course is offered on this site.

You do not need to solve the whole problem tomorrow morning.

Start by understanding the pattern, choosing the next manageable step, and building from there.
